Pinocchio Parenting (Lies 16 17 18)

#16 Lie: Of course there's a Santa Claus
The Truth: Telling kids something today only to untell it tomorrow will cost you your credibilty. It's better to tell your kids the truth about Santa...in stages.

I don't think this lie is very relevant to us here at this side of the globe ;-)

#17 Lie: Busy kids are happy kids
The Truth: Busy is not better...it leads to overwhelmed kids and overspent parents. Balance is better.

Adding balance and quality time to your child's life:
1. Set aside quality family time. Eg family nite (like what my good friend Mrs K is already practising!)

2. When necessary, step in and help your kids trim their schedules.

Tell it to Singaporean parents, lol

#18 Lie: All good things come in small packages

The Truth: Some good things in life do come in small packages; but when it comes to the size of our dreams, bigger is better.

Chapter challenges parents to examine themselves first - are you pursuing your dream? (Hmmmm)

Kids need to dream with their eyes open and their feet on the ground - this minimizes "delusional dreams"

Kids need to progress from dreaming to doing with purpose and perseverance in order to make their dreams come true - this minimizes "dormant dreams".

We also need to encourage our children to dream big - this minimizes "deficient dreams".
This is how:

1. Teach kids the significance of "dreaming" as well as importance of "doing".

2. Give your young telescopes rather than microscopes - tell stories of ordinary people who achieved extraordinary accomplishments because they are driven by their dreams. Dreaming bigger than their abilities gives God a chance to show up and take their dreams from good to great.

3. Model the process of dreaming big for your kids.

4. Help your kids define their dreams by talking about them - write dreams on note cards and stick them on prominent places.

5. Pray for your kids' dreams when you tuck them in bed at night. Let them know who the real Dream Giver is ;-)
