Fun & Fear

It's scary how time flies! The first week of the month-long school holiday whizzed by. We spent some time at a chalet (a very Singapore-thing) at the start of the break. We indulged in the usual activities like swimming and bumming at the beach. But we were surprised at the free tickets of Wild Wild Wet (a water themed park) thrown in. Am grateful for the wonderful time and thanks to my sister who booked the chalet for us.

Just a day ago, we read in the papers that a 6-year-old girl (just 2 weeks shy of her 7th birthday) was drowned in a resort pool. She doesn't know how to swim. It is really unfortunate.

Even though my 2 boys can swim very well, I always keep a sharp eye on them at the pool. There is just this morbid fear that something terrible may happen. It doesn't help that they feel so confident in the pool. I remembered my sister told me to keep a close watch when Ethan did his bronze survival test. She told me a kid drowned because the tester didn't spot him struggling among the so many kids taking the test. I was a bundle of nerves at the test time. Ethan was knocked into several times when he tried to inflat his pyjamas. I was so worried when I saw him struggling that I told the tester. I was scolded soundly :-( He said I shouldn't send him for the test if he wasn't ready yet and that I was interrupting his job. Fortunately Ethan "surfaced" and completed that task. The next time he took the Silver test, I guai guai witnessed it at a far distance.

I can swim but there is always the fear of drowning. I guess fear is a double-edged thingy. Yes, it holds you back from doing something but it also reminds you to be vigilant. How to achieve the balance when encouraging our kids to try out new things and yet be careful is the million-dollar question.
