Doubting

The South Korean hostages in Afganistan are finally released after 6 weeks in captivity. We give thanks to God for this deliverance. My heart goes out to the family of the 2 men in the group who didn't make it for they were brutally shot. I think the coming days will be difficult for those who survived the ordeal. Their own country men are divided in their opinions regarding this group. Some are encouraged by their faith and their mission work. Others questioned how prudent they have been in deciding on this trip. Some others blamed them for all the trouble. I've read in the papers that churches there "compete" to send out mission workers. No matter, the faith of these young Christian men and women will never be the same again. Maybe some of them will be plagued by doubt just like Mother Teresa had been.

"Where is my Faith – even deep down right in there is nothing but emptiness & darkness...," Mother Teresa wrote in an undated address to Jesus. It is not a coincidence that this week, we read of the letters that Mother Teresa wrote which revealed that she struggled with doubt (even with existence of God) for decades right till her death.

It's ok to doubt. Thomas doubted - "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my fingers into his side, I will not believe it." (John 20:25). But I pray and hope that those Korean Christians (and for myself too if it happens to me) will eventually respond like Thomas did: My Lord and my God!

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)
