A few days back, a pleasant surprise greeted me when I read the papers. A young man I know won an award that recognises his active participation in community projects. The report also mentioned that he is Harvard-bound this September.
Which isn't surprising to me. His elder brother graduated from Stanford. I know the family as they are formerly from my church. Reading the news report reminded me of an article which I archived because I found it so true. The mum who wrote the piece asked what would people say our family's mission is when they look at our lives - heaven or harvard? I think the frequency in which our kids' education is discussed among church members, especially mums, leaves no doubt to the answer.
The young man I mentioned grew up in a family where spiritual training is very important. I know because his mum passed me many bible-related materials like story books and devotional books that her boys have outgrown. She wrote encouraging messages at the back of the cover to the boys. At the back of one of these books, a child's handwriting bears this simple prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, please hold us close to You in Your loving arms. Amen.
Heaven AND Harvard. I can only say WoW.
