The boys have worn their insoles for a year and a half already! My 2 previous posts on the boys' flat-foot condition are here and here. The last assessment on Sunday yielded one good news and one bad news. We expected that actually because the improvements are visible to the eye. Both Ewan's feet have the arch formed and he doesn't need the supports anymore! Ethan on the other hand, was advised to continue with a new custom-fitted insole (he has outgrown the old one) so as to build on the improvement he has had. Several reasons for the different results. One, Ethan has pronated feet. (The heel bone angles inward so the arch tends to collapse.) Secondly, Ewan is much younger so the problem was in a way easier to correct.
The custom-made insoles don't come cheap. My brother paid for both pairs the last time. But both papa and I thought it best for Ethan to continue with it. That would entail another 18 months of wearing shoes with the insoles for 10 hours daily. It is a somewhat tricky situation to manage as a parent because after all, it does take a lot of discipline to wear shoes at home as well so as to fulfill the daily requirement. (He wears them for about 7 hours in school). Now, one needs to wear and the other doesn't. Oh well, "putting yourself in his shoes" does take on a new meaning for me!
