Sprains & Gains

Ethan sprained his foot last Thursday and has missed school since. I don't mean he actually misses going to school ;-) His classmate who lives next block passed him the school work that he missed. Ethan groaned at the sight of it and Ewan quickly pronounced "Homework is bad for your health". We had a good laugh.

This is the second time Ethan sprained his foot. The first time happened in school too and it took more than a week before he could walk. We went to the A&E upon the advice of the GP. The doctor at the A&E pronounced no bones broken, prescribed bandage and pain killers and assured us that he should be well in a few days' time. We got worried when he couldn't even stand up 4 days later. The tui na lady who came to give me massages (yes, i had to have a recurring back pain at the same time), massaged Ethan's foot and taught me how to do it for him. Ethan walked the next day!!

We now know that he is prone to sprains. We found out that his flat feet condition is quite serious. We fitted him with a customised arch support which he is supposed to wear for 10 hours every day for 1.5 years. We encourage swimming instead of badminton which he likes. Despite this and constant reminders to mind his feet, the second sprain (on a different foot, thank goodness) has to happen barely 4 months later. But the difference this time is that I know what to do. I am inclined to think that it is thanks to my massages that Ethan is able to return to school so soon (tomorrow) and thus doesn't need to miss school so much :-)
