Ewan has transited from reading aloud to reading silently and enjoying books on his own. We can nurture the love for reading (like reading to them & teaching them to sound out the words) but they have to "get there" on their own. I think it's a huge step forward to be able to read in your heart, get around difficult words, comprehend and enjoy the story. Ewan's satisfaction in completing a book is priceless. Once he finishes, he would share the story with me (very) eagerly ;-)
Ethan also had a mini milestone lately. He walks home from school on his own on those days he has to stay back for lessons or activities. It's a good 15-minute walk with traffic junctions to handle. He was so proud of himself the first time he did it (and this mama was trying hard not to show him any anxiety she was feeling!)
You can only hand-hold so much. If you don't let go, how are they going to get there?
