Learning Journey: National Museum of Singapore

Last Thursday, i was the chaperon for Ewan's class during their visit to the National Museum of Singapore, as part of their Learning Journey programme.

When the bus passed by Little India, one of Ewan's classmate asked me, "Aunty, last year you accompanied us to Little India hoh?"

With mock horror in my eyes i replied "Huh, one year already ah?". That boy quickly said "Er, i don't know..." LOL

Ewan's form teacher, Ms H was overall in charge of this programme that involved all the P3 classes. As such, we were the last class to leave for the museum and last class to leave the museum, no matter how well behaved the boys were :) Anyway, the driver who drove us there DID NOT know the way and he circled the vicinity before the form teacher realised something amissed. Despite Ms H and myself keeping our cool, the boys were too smart not to realise that the driver was lost, lol

And worse, he stopped at the BACK of the museum. The hardworking security guards immediately pounced on us but relented to let us walk to the front through the back door :) So much for an eventful start.

My friend who is chaperoning another class called me to ask where in the world we are, cos only Ms H can collect the tickets, LOL

Anyway, before the P3 boys started the programme, the head or chief security spoke to the boys as seen the pic above about etiquette in the museum but he called it RULES lah *shake head* - no running, no talking loudly, no eating or drinking, no flash photography. i should have taken a bet with him that presented this way, guarantee you the boys will do just that :) OK, to be fair, the boys didn't use flash when they took pictures......... i did. Bwahahahahaha. It was purely an accident lor and fortunately it happened outside an exhibition room, not inside. But it didn't stop the boys from chorusing NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY (contributing to an additional rule broken in the process).


This is one of the 4 Singapore Living Galleries: Photography - Framing the Family. Here we see 100 years of family life in Singapore through photos and exhibits such as furniture and touch screens presentations. And no, i didn't have the time to really look around cos i am the chaperon remember? Wait one of them break an antique how?? LOL


Ewan smelling a herb at the gallery Food - Eating on the Street. Here we see the street food culture in Singapore - 10 iconic dishes (laksa, satay, tu tu kueh, tok tok mee, etc) were showcased through exhibits (like the stall), photographs, and yes, touch screens presentations.


This is the gallery Fashion - Shopping for Identity. The pic above shows the different types of fabric. We also saw old sewing machines and was reminded of the one at my mum's place. Anyway, i think all museum are purposely dimly lit lah, so i can't take good pics with my camera. Time to upgrade, LOL

The last gallery is the Film & Wayang - Scripting a New Life. Above you see some boys watching an old Malay HORROR film. Not sure why the boys screamed. A hand coming out (or was it going down) the soil only mah.

The last stop for the day is Singapore History Gallery (14th century to modern time). The boys were prepared by Ms H way before the trip about the audio sets. They were really excited by this. i suppose it's this generation growing up with technology. They were briefed by the museum staff to press the number indicated on the floor of the exhibition area for a detailed explanation of the exhibits.


i would say Singapore History Gallery is well done, just that i didn't have time to listen to all the audio narrations. Some of the exhibits brought back memories of me growing up in the 70s.

Done. Phew. At least i can say i've been to the Museum lor, LOL
