A friend told me today that he had resigned from his job so that he can have the time to do what he really wants to do.
And what he wants to do is to partner his wife to serve the poor and needy in developing countries. His wife's job is a meaningful one: she links up people who would like to help (money or skills) with the low income in Cambodia, Thailand, etc. A little like micro-financing, giving them help to start a small business, like buying farm animals and planting fruit trees. The difference is the giver of the help will get to meet with the recipient as facilitated by my friend's wife so that the giver knows exactly how his/her help is impacting the recipient and the recipient knows who he/she is accountable to. In addition, this is the part i like, when the recipient is in the position to earn money as a result, he/she will be expected to bless the community by rendering similar help. For instance, a Singaporean may be donating an amount to help a villager to buy a few pigs. When the pigs multiply, the villager would be able to sell them at the market and earn some money. The villager can also give one of the pigs to a neighbour in need.
My friend wants to be able to partner his wife in her work but serving in another area of need. He is a counselor/coach specializing in relationships and he sees the need to build & strengthen communities in these areas. He told me he would not be able to do all these if he continues to hold down a job. i'm sure you are able to tell that this new venture won't be a paid job :)
His income from now on will be irregular as he takes on counselling / coaching assignments as they come along.
Is this a leap of faith? i didn't get to ask this question but what i'm certain and am impressed with, is he knows what he wants to do and does it :)
